Ceremony Structure: The Basics

Planning to get married can leave you feeling a little dazed and confused!

Once you navigate the guest list, what you’ll wear and when and where you will have the wedding, actually sitting down to get to the nuts and bolts of the wedding ceremony can be a difficult task. To help you we’ve laid out the basics of a usual  wedding ceremony (please note this does not have any religious or cultural elements).  By usual, we mean how a ceremony would run in general. Aside from the aspects that are legally obligated, you can play around with this format as much as you like to suit your personal relationship style.  Don’t be scared to get creative!  It is your day after all.

  • Chosen music or song (as parties enter)
  • Welcome
  • Introduction of the couple’s history, values, ideals and hopes for the future
  • Reading or readings
  • Giving away
  • Commitment and Vows
  • Exchange of Rings
  • Reading or readings
  • Declaration of marriage (your Celebrant will make this declaration)
  • Signing of Marriage Licence
  • Presenation of married couple
  • Recessional song (as couple leave)

Don’t forget, there are no hard or fast rules.  As long as you meet the legal requirements you can make your day exactly as YOU want it.  Dig deep, think about the memories you want to create and find a Celebrant who will help to facilitate that.  This is going to be one of the most important days in your life, and in your relationship, you deserve to have a day that is truthful, meaningful and full of joy and love.
